Here are some pretty cool online games to help people learn individual spellings:
Spelling City: http://www.spellingcity.com/ Type in some words that you have trouble spelling. Make sure you get the spelling right, but the program will tell you if it doesn't recognise a word. Then it speaks the word and also puts it in a sentence for you. How clever is that! Then it teaches you the spellings: you can play a variety of games with the words or it will test you.
East of the Web: http://www.eastoftheweb.com/games/index.html has got some very addictive games for people who like playing with words.

Hi Fernando,
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for your comment. Glad you like the blog. Had a quick look at yours too and really liked it. We seem to have similar (professional) tastes.
I had a go at the game and enjoyed playing (100% yay!). But I have to say I do have my reservations about activities that ask you to look at wrong spellings and say if they're right or not. There were a few words on the list that I've never had a problem spelling - my hand just seems to spell them automatically. But once I looked at them I started to doubt. I don't think it's such a problem for good spellers as they like the challenge and are usually confident enough in their spelling not to get confused, but may not be useful for weak spellers. Having said this, learners do need to be able to recognise whether a word 'looks right' or not. That's why I do a lot of work with word shapes. See http://thespellingblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/seeing-spelling.html and http://thespellingblog.blogspot.com/search/label/-el%20-al%20-le%20endings
What do you (and other people) think? Do you think it's a problem for learners to look at misspelt words in games such as this? I'd love to hear.
Johanna
